Jötunn (Giants)

GiantsFrost

The Jötunn are the oldest of all beings. They sprung from the blackness of  the Ginnungagap, forged by the fire of  Muspelheim and the melting ice of Niflheim. Their first being was used to craft the Earth and Midgard. Most giants live to bring chaos back to Odin’s ordered universe.

GiantsSurtJötunn, also referred to as Etins,  are like any other living beings. They are considered a class of Wights.

They inhabit the lands of Jötunheim, many remote spaces in the wild, and can even be consider an elemental force of nature. An elemental force can be a tornado, tsunami, earthquake, and so forth. Our ancestors were aware that the chaos of giants were not limited to a physical body of flesh and bones.

Some Jötunn can be allies of the gods and with mankind.  These giants are sometime referred to as “Utangardh“, which translates into “out-yard”, or not part of a specific group.  One example of an Utangardh is the snow giantess, Skaði. She marries into the Æsir bloodline and aides them in their adventures. A second example would be Aegir, the giant who rules the seven seas.

Thursar” is the label given to the evil and chaotic Jötunn. An example of a Thurs is the great fire giant Surt. Surt waits in Muspelheim with his great fire sword for Ragnarok, when he will set fire to the nine realms.
